BR A1A-A1A Class 80 E1000/E2001

This locomotive was originally built by Metropolitan-Vickers as a gas turbine locomotive for the
Great Western Railway ordered in 1946 and delivered to British Railways in 1951.
In 1958 it was withdrawn from service and sent to Metropolitan Vickers Bowesfield works to be converted to BRs first 25kV AC Electric locomotive.
Its intended use was for testing and driver training for use on the West Coast mainline electrification. (at that point in time planned as an electrified route from Liverpool/Manchester-Crewe and eventually to Euston).
In 1961 it was sent to Glasgow and used for testing the new suburban electrification system there.
After withdrawal it was stored at Akeman St. reportedly as a weather laboratory and Rugby before being sold for scrap and cut up at J Cashmore’s, Great Bridge in November 1972.




BR Number 1958 E1000, renumbered in 1959 to E2001
Withdrawn in 1968 and scrapped in 1972
