SR/BR Q1

SR/BR Q1
Bulleid introduced these 0-6-0 tender locomotives during the Second World War in 1942.
In the design all unnecessary ornamentation was discarded with the purpose of reducing weight and materials.
A Q1 class locomotive could not be mistaken for any other type with its unique styling.
The class were very useful locomotives capable of working on 93% of the lines in the Southern Railway's territory.
Their main purpose was freight but they could also be found on occasional passenger workings especially in the summer months.
The locomotives were at first numbered C1-C40 (C being the designation for a locomotive with an 0-6-0 wheel arrangement), they were renumbered between 1948 and 1950 after being taken into the BR fleet.
Apart from working on the Southern Region the locomotives could be found on inter-regional freights in the London area.
