GWR 5101







GWR/BR 5101 (Large Prairie Tank)
Built from 1903-1906 later rebuilt.
These locomotives were originally designed by Churchward and later rebuilt by Collet who added further newly built engines from 1929-1949.
These 2-6-2T locomotives were given power class 4MT by BR and worked all over the ex GWR system from Birkenhead to Penzance and Pembrokeshire to London.
A similar class the 61XX which were slightly more powerful with increased boiler pressure were classified 5MT.
The large Prairie tank locomotives could be found on passenger and freight workings and have proved popular with preserved railways.


BR number series 4100-4179 & 5101-5199

Last Locomotive withdrawn in 1964.

8 have been preserved with 2 additional ones used as donor locomotives for other projects.


The 5101 sounds have been recorded from the prototype.
