IE 201

Class 201 Co-Co
With no new locomotives being delivered since 1976 and a need to improve the service timetable it was decided by Iarnrod Eireann to purchase 32 locomotives with an engine rating of 3200hp.
These locomotives were ordered from General Motors but this batch were built in Canada.
The locomotives named after Rivers are the most powerful and fastest locomotives to operate in Ireland (only 100hp short of the legendary production Deltics on British Railways) they were used on mainline Inter-City services and with the introduction of the De-Dietrich push pull sets were put to use on the Dublin – Belfast 'Enterprise' service.
All are fitted with HEP but only those allocated to Belfast-Dublin duties uses it until recently when generator cars were introduced to the De-Dietrich sets from redundant MkIIIs.
Some dedicated Dublin-Belfast locomotives have been repainted into the new Enterprise livery and renumbered with the European numbering system.
206, 207, 227 done and 233 due to be repainted next.

Northern Ireland Railways Purchased 2 of these locomotives in 1995 for use on the Belfast – Dublin service.
These locomotives also named after Rivers were pooled with the IE group and have on occasion been seen South and West of Dublin.
Renumbered to 8208 and 8209, now carrying the European numbering system and repainted into the new Enterprise livery.
