Blackpool Balloon

The Blackpool Balloon trams numbers 237-263 were introduced to replace the ageing Dreadnought and standard tramcars.
The twenty-seven Balloon tramcars were manufactured by English Electric in Preston between 1934 and 1935 the first thirteen were open-topped.
The trams were designed with central doors and stairs with a capacity of 84-94 passengers. During WWII the thirteen open-topped cars had their tops enclosed and look identical to the original closed topped ones.

The Balloon trams mostly operated on the Squires Gate service but in 1958 check rails were installed allowing the Balloon tramcars to work through to Fleetwood.

In 1968 the tramcars were renumbered to 700-726, Numbers 714 and 725 were entirely rebuilt into jubilee tramcars numbered 762 and 761.
An accident in 1980 caused 705 to be scrapped and 706 to be rebuilt as an open topped tram.
