NIR ‘Castle’ class 450




Class 450 DEMU (Castle Class)
Manufactured in 1985 by BREL Derby this class consisted of 9 3 car trains based on the British Railways Mk3 carriage but built on withdrawn BR Mk1 carriage frames.
They bear a strong resemblance to the BR class 210 Diesel Electric Multiple Units.
The configuration of the units are DM-T-DT (Driving Motor coach, centre Trailer coach and Driving Trailer coach).
Corridor connections are provided within the set and also at the DT end of the formation.
The power units used are English Electric 4SRKT 550hp diesel engines which were salvaged from withdrawn Class 70 units (only 8 class 70s were available so the 9
th was taken from Class 80 No.88). The two traction motors are mounted on the rear bogie of the DM Vehicle.
The last unit was withdrawn in 2012 following the arrival of the Class 3000 units
