Stockton & Darlington Railway 0-4-0 Locomotion No. 1, 1825

Stockton & Darlington Railway 0-4-0 Locomotion No. 1, 1825

In September 1825 Locomotion No. 1 became famous for hauling the first train on the first public railway. Locomotion was built for the Stockton and Darlington Railway and is thought to be the first locomotive where the wheels were connected by coupling rods connecting its driving wheels together.
In 1828 Locomotion’s boiler exploded and the locomotive was rebuilt continuing to work on the railway until 1850 when it was converted into a stationary boiler.
The historic importance of the locomotive was appreciated and in 1857 it was preserved and put on display.
From 1892 and 1975 it was displayed on a plinth at Darlington Bank Top Station after which it was moved to the N.R.M at Shildon.
A working replica was built in 1975 and used at the Beamish Museum before moving to the Head of Steam Museum (now Hopetown Darlington).
