Adtranz/ Bombardier Class 170 Turbostar Class 170 2 & 3 car units
Designed after the privatisation of British Railways these units entered service in 1999.
Built in Derby at Litchurch Lane Works the units were delivered in either 2 or 3 car formations and could work in multiple with classs150-159.
They are allowed to work in multiple with unoccupied units in classes 141-143.
Of the 139 units built 9 were converted to class 168 and 8 converted to class 171 leaving 122 in service.
Power is provided by MTU 6R 183 TD 13H diesel engines (one per car) driving through Voith T211 transmissions.
The units are in service with Scotrail, Northern, East Midlands, Cross Country, and have also been used by First Trans-Pennine Express, Hull Trains, Midland mainline, Central Trains, Greater Anglia, South West Trains, Govia Thameslink, Transport for Wales, West Midlands, & London Midland,

Nos. 170301-170309 converted to class 168 and 170392, 170421 & 170721-170726 converted to class 171
