Metropolitan Vickers Class 28 Co-Bo DE
Introduced in 1958 the 20 members of the class were fitted with Crossley HSTV8 two stroke diesel engines of 1200 bhp.
One of the least successful of the ‘Pilot Scheme Diesels’ ordered by British Railways they were prone to vibration, water and oil pipe leaks, and cylinder defects.
The Diesel engines were of the same type as fitted to the C.I.E (Irish Rail) Class A and Western Australian Government Railways X Class, both of those railways also had similar major problems with their locomotives.
