GNR Stirling Single 4-2-2
GNR Stirling Single 4-2-2
In 1870 Stirling produced his 8 foot single No.1, single referring to the single driving axle.
Intended for express trains between Kings Cross and Doncaster/Leeds/York these locomotives regularly ran at 85mph with some speeds in excess of 90 mph being recorded, especially down Essendine Bank.
During the next 2 years a further 4 were built, it seems strange that the design was still in production up until 1894 by which time 53 had been produced.
The last of the class were used on passenger trains up until 1916 and the first of the class No.1 was preserved being returned to working order in 1930 and again in the 1980s.
Great Northern Railway number series (known) 1, 671,771-8, 1001-8
