Highland/LMS Jones Goods 4-6-0
Highland/LMS Jones Goods 4-6-0
In 1894 David Jones of the Highland Railway designed the first 4-6-0 locomotive to work in the United Kingdom. As its name suggests it was primarily a freight locomotive but would often be used on passenger trains on the arduous hills of the Highland Railway.
Fifteen were built and the class survived in regular use up until 1940.
Fortunately the historical significance of the class was appreciated by the L.M.S and the first of the class No. 103 was set aside for preservation in 1934.
In 1959 103 was restored to working order and was popular on enthusiast specials until final retirement to Glasgow Transport Museum now the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.
Highland Numbers 103-117 LMS Numbers 17916-17930.
Last locomotive withdrawn in 1940.
One is preserved.
