Hawthorn Leslie

Robert Hawthorn founded a company in 1817 to build Marine and Steam engines, in 1831 their first locomotive was built.
In1884 they amalgamated with A. Leslie and Company forming Hawthorn Leslie.
In all over 2,500 locomotives were built up until 1937 when Robert Stephenson & Co. bought the business.
The locomotives produced were sold to mainly Industrial use in the U.K. including Coal Mines, Docks, Quarries, & factories.
A large number of locomotives were built for foreign railways.
One of the most preserved examples of Hawthorne Leslie’s locomotives is the
0-4-0ST (Saddle Tank) manufactured from 1899-1924

Over 20 examples of Hawthorne Leslie 0-4-0ST have been preserved.
