W. G. Bagnall Standard Heavy Industrial Shunter.

W. G. Bagnall Standard Heavy Industrial Shunter.

After WW11 Bagnall’s introduced a new design of heavy industrial shunter with 18 inch outside cylinders fitted with piston valves and Walschaerts valve gear.
The class were fitted with a saddle tank and many labour and maintenance saving devices such as roller bearings, rocking grate and hopper style ashpan.
Sales of the locomotive did not reach the estimated quantities as industrial diesel locomotives were becoming the norm.
Although revolutionary only four were built, they were sold to the Steel Company of Wales Port Talbot site.
Being replaced by diesels two were sold to British Leyland (Austin Works) at Longbridge and one to the NCB.

The two locomotives used at British Leyland Longbridge, Vulcan and Victor, have been preserved.
