Hunslet Penrhyn Quarry – Narrow Gauge Quarry 0-4-0ST Locomotives Alice, Dorothea, Nesta, Britomart & others

Between 1870 and 1932 Hunslet built lightweight 0-4-0 Saddle Tank locomotives for use in the slate quarries of North Wales.
The locomotives were very versatile working on the ledges or galleries of the quarries which were narrow and had many sharp corners.
The class of locomotive has proved popular with narrow gauge preserved railways being easily maintained and far more economic to run than many other classes of locomotive.
The original locomotives had no cabs to allow them to pass under low rock overhangs and narrow tunnels.
Some later models had basic cabs fitted.
Many of the preserved examples have had cabs fitted which gives them a rather ‘Rowland Emmett’ style appearance.
Some preserved examples have travelled as far as Canada and the United States.
The locomotives have proved so popular that a number of Miniature Railway copies have been made from 7 1/2 inch to 12 1/4 inch gauge.

Not all functions are available on all locomotives.
