LNER/GCR/BR A5

After the London extension of the Great Central railway was opened there was a need for fast outer suburban trains to operate from the Aylesbury area to Marylebone.
Between 1911 and 1923 Robinson the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the GCR produced 32 of these 4-6-2T locomotives.
After the amalgamation of the railways in 1923 The LNER had a requirement for further locomotives of the type for use in the North East and added a further 13 but this time with an improved cab with side windows and Westinghouse brakes (the Westinghouse brakes were later removed during the 1930s). Subsequently the original locomotives were modified with the newer style cabs.
In BR days their operational sphere was bounded by London Liverpool St & Marylebone, Nottingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle, Hull, Immingham, and Norwich mainly working passenger services.
