BR Crosti Boilered 9F

BR Crosti Boilered 9F

In 1955 the Crosti designed preheater was installed in ten 9F’s to make the locomotive more efficient by use of otherwise waste hot gasses.
The system installed had a slightly smaller main boiler than the Standard 9F and a secondary pre-heating boiler situated beneath.
The exhaust steam and hot gasses from the smokebox were re-routed through this secondary boiler and exhausted via a chimney on the mid right-hand side of the locomotive.
The system did not save as much fuel as hoped and the preheating boilers were removed, and the locos rebuilt in 1959.
Due to the smaller dimensions of the firebox and boiler these locos were less powerful than the Standard 9F’s and were therefore downgraded to power class 8F.
The Crosti’s were shedded at some time or another in Merseyside, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire Bedfordshire, Manchester, and Birmingham but they will be best remembered for the long coal trains from Wellingborough to London.
