GWR/BR ROD (ex WD WW1) 2-8-0 3000-3099

Robinson of the Great Central Railway designed a 2-8-0 heavy freight locomotive in 1911, the purpose of which was to haul heavy freight.
A quantity of 130 were built for that railway up to 1920, with a further 15 added afterwards.

In WW1 the design was adopted by the Railway Operating Division (ROD) of the Royal Engineers who ordered 521 locomotives, built by North British, Robert Stephenson & the GCR, between 1917 and the 1920s.
After the war the locomotives surplus to military requirements were offered for sale some 423 being sold to British Mainline Railways, including the LNWR, GCR (LNER), & GWR.
46 were sold to China and 13 to J & A Brown for use their Australian colliery system.

Initially the GWR bought 20 locomotives in 1919 they then hired a further batch of about 80-85.
When the hired locos were due to be returned the best few were purchased together with additional locos from the M.o.D. dump giving the GWR a fleet of 100.
Of the locos numbered 3000-3099 the best 50 were given GWR fittings and numbered 3000-3049 the last 50 being used until major overhauls were required then scrapped.
The tenders from the scrapped locos were re used, notably on the Collett 0-6-0 locos of class 2251.
Of the 50 given GWR fittings 45 entered BR stock in 1948 with 16 locos being withdrawn that year, the fleet now at 29 survived for another 5 years before scrapping began in earnest with only 5 being left by 1958.

BR number series 3002-3049.
Last Locomotive withdrawn 1958.
None of the GWR batch were saved but one of the Robinson O4s from the LNER has been preserved.
