GWR/BR Pannier Tank 1600 Class

Although designed by Hawksworth for the Great Western Railway these 70 Pannier tank locomotives did not enter service until 1949 and therefore were taken directly into BR stock.
Production continued up until 1955, withdrawals commenced in 1959 one only spending five and three quarters years in service.
The class were used on light shunting duties and being of low height were suitable for branches with low clearance.
In 1957 two were transferred to Helmsdale shed in Scotland to work the Dornoch branch.
Two were sold to the NCB.

BR Number series 1600-1669.

Last Locomotive withdrawn in 1966.
1 has been preserved
