LNER/BR Y1 & Y3
In 1925 the LNER had a need for small modern economic shunting engines that could work in confined areas of factories and docks.
They found their needs were covered by the Sentinel Wagon Works Ltd’s standard industrial shunter. The locomotives of Y1 Class had high pressure boilers linked to cylinders and chain transmission to the wheels.
Y3 class were similar but had two speed gears as opposed to the Y1 which had single speed transmission.
Y1 and Y3 class locomotives could be found from Lowestoft to Wrexham and Hawick to Stratford. The LMS Sentinel No.s 47180-47183 and GWR No 12.
BR Number series Y1 68130-68153 plus Departmental Nos. 4, 6, 37, 39, & 51-54
The last locomotive was withdrawn from BR stock in 1959, last withdrawn from departmental service 1963.
One has been preserved



BR Number series Y3 681354-68185 plus Departmental Nos. 3, 5, 7, 8, 21,38, 40-42 &57.
The last locomotive was withdrawn from BR capital stock in 1958.
Last withdrawn from departmental service 1964.
None of this batch have been preserved.
