LBSCR/SR/BR A, A1X (Terrier & Rooter)

LBSCR/SR/BR A, A1X (Terrier & Rooter)
Designed by Stroudley for the London Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) these 50 0-6-0 tank locomotives were built from 1872-1880.
The design was Stroudley's answer to the traffic departments request for a light locomotive with fast acceleration for use on the rapidly expanding suburban lines of South London.
Due to electrification of some lines and trainloads beginning to exceed their strength the Terriers were moved to other depots in the South East, performing pilot, shunting and branch line duties.
The LBSCR decided that they had too many for their current traffic needs and decided to scrap those coming up for heavy overhaul and sell others.
Sales were to the SECR, Isle of Wight Central R, LSWR, Freshwater, Yarmouth & Newport R, Newhaven Harbour Co., the Admiralty, Weston Clevedon & Portishead R, Kent & East Sussex R & various industrial railways.
Others found a new lease of life on auto-trains being introduced on feeder services to the main line.
The A1X class Terriers were re-boilered by Billinton from 1911.
Of the 50 built 16 ( 2 of which are on the Western Region see exGWR section) entered BR service.
2 operated as W8 & W16 on the isle of Wight, those numbered DSXXX were in departmental service. Due to their light weight and small size they have become popular with preserved railways.
