GWR/BR Dukedog or Earl 9000 class.

GWR/BR Dukedog or Earl 9000 class.
Designed by Collett and built as new engines from 1936 to 1939 these 4-4-0 outside framed engines were in fact rebuilds using the frames of withdrawn Bulldog class engines and the boilers of withdrawn Duke class engines, hence the name Dukedog.
Some were originally given the names of Earls but the GWR received complaints that the names should be allocated to more prestigious locomotives so the names were transferred to Castle class locos.
The class were originally numbered in the 32XX series being renumbered in the 90XX series in 1946 to release their old numbers for new Collett 2251 class engines.
Due to their light axle weight the locomotives spent their time generally on 2 groups of lines, the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton (until that line was upgraded in WWII) and the Cambrian lines.
