Designed by Wainwright and introduced in 1900, just after the merger of the South Eastern and London Chatham & Dover Railways, these freight engines could due to their robust design be found on many diverse activities including on the odd occasion passenger work at quite high speeds for their era.
109 engines were built the last two of which were transferred to departmental stock in 1963 working at Ashford works in Kent.
Their area of operation was from Kent in the East to Feltham, Guildford and Brighton in the West.
