LNER/BR A3

LNER/BR A3
Designed by Nigel Gresley for express passenger work on Kings Cross to Scotland and the North East.
These locomotives had an interesting history, their origination was a batch of 52 A1 class locomotives built between 1922 and 1925 with 180psi boilers.
In 1927 Gresley introduced a new 220psi boiler and fitted them to 5 A1 locomotives reclassifying them A3.
These were so successful that all the A1 locomotives were re-boilered becoming class A3.
A further production of 24 locomotives received these new boilers.
The locomotives were allocated to sheds from Kings Cross to Aberdeen, Newcastle & Leeds with some straying into Great Central territory and Carlisle.
Tenders on some locomotives were given corridor tenders so that crews could be exchanged on long non stop runs.
Given 7P power class by British Railways they could often be seen doing the work of an 8P classified engine and in their later years were equally at home on express passenger, mail or parcels trains.

BR number series 60035-60113
The last locomotive was withdrawn in 1966.
One (Flying Scotsman) has been preserved.

The file has been updated to the new functions.
Not all functions are available on all locomotives.
