Built by Metro-Cammell Birmingham between 1987 and 1989 and known as Super Sprinters these units are nearing the end of their operational lives and are due for replacement from 2019 onwards.
The sets have one Cummins NT855R5engine of 285hp and Voith hydraulic drive.
Some of the Scotrail examples are fitted with Radio Electric Token Block (RETB)for use on single lines.
