As the Northern Ireland economy gained momentum various infrastructure changes took place and an increase in the timetable frequency demanded further trains.
An order was raised for 20x 3 car units the first entering service in 2011 the rest following between then and 2012.
In the contract was a clause that allowed the further purchase of single cars to increase the train length.
The engines installed are MTU6H1800R83 of 530 hp.max speed 90mph.

The class 4000 CAF sounds have been recorded from the prototype.
