British Railways Class 59
The first privately owned mainline locomotives to operate on British Railways were ordered by Foster Yeoman from the EMD section of General Motors.
No.s 59001-59004 were built in 1985 and 59005 in 1989.
Following the success of these first locomotives Amey Roadstone ordered four of the class and National Power a further six.
Ownership passed to Aggregate industries, Hanson UK and DB Cargo respectively.
Now 59001,59002 59004,59005 and 59101-59104 are operated by Freightliner, 59003 by GBRf and 59201-59206 by DB Cargo.
The locomotives are powered by a General Motors 16-645E3C 3300hp engine with General Motors D77B traction motors.
