LBSCR/SR/BR E4
Designed by Billinton for the London Brighton and South Coast railway (LBSCR) these 0-6-2 Tank locomotives were built from 1897-1903.
Originally the locomotives had short smokeboxes but were gradually rebuilt with boilers designed by Marsh with extended smokeboxes, the last one being so treated in 1949.
Originally there were 75 in the class 4 being rebuilt as class E4X between 1909 and 1911with boilers of increased diameter, another one was withdrawn during WW11.
There were, therefore 70 left to be taken into BR stock in 1948.
BR power classified the locomotives as 2MT indicating their mixed traffic role.
The locomotives in BR Days were shedded between Dorchester, Reading, Brighton, St Leonard’s, Tunbridge Wells and London.
