Designed by Hill for the Great Eastern Railway’s busy commuter traffic from Liverpool Street Station the N7’s debut was in 1914.
The production continued and when the GER were amalgamated into the LNER in 1922 Gresley modified the design with round topped fireboxes.
Production continued up until 1928.
The locomotives could be found on the ex GER lines out of London, Norwich, Harwich, Hartford, Cambridge, Kings Lynn etc.
For a while examples could be found as far a field as Nottingham, Leeds, and Lincoln.
The BR power class allocated to these locos was 3MT.

The last locomotive was withdrawn in 1962.
