GWR 72xx

GWR/BR 7200 Class
In the depression of the 1930s there was a decline in the amount of coal being shipped from the Welsh Valleys and as a result there was a surplus of 2-8-0T locomotives of the 4200 and 5205 classes some of which had never been used in traffic.
Collett, therefore, in 1934 drew up plans to convert the final 20 5205 Class locomotives in store at Swindon to 2-8-2 tank locomotives by extending the bunker space and adding a trailing pair of wheels.
Later a further 20 5205 Class and 14 4200 Class were similarly rebuilt.
The additional bunker space enabled them to be used on longer distance freight workings.
The locomotives were classified as power class 8F by BR and spent their entire lives on heavy freight trains and could be found shedded between Didcot to Llanelly and Wolverhampton to St Blazey.
