GWR 47xx ’Night Owls’

GWR/BR 4700 Class (Night Owls)
Designed by Churchward and introduced in 1919 and 1923 the class consisted of nine 2-8-0 locomotives.
They were the final locomotives designed by George Jackson Churchward and were built at Swindon works.
They were designed for use on heavy night time brake fitted fast freights, hence the nickname 'Night Owls'.
Restricted to the main lines because of their weight they worked mainly Paddington to West of England and Paddington to Birkenhead freights.
They could, however , be found on passenger work especially on summer weekends.

BR number series 4700-4708.

Last Locomotive withdrawn in 1964.
None have been preserved but the Great Western Society are building a replica using the cylinders from 28XX and 5101 class locomotives.
