Derby Lightweight DMU

Derby Lightweight

Coupling code Yellow Diamond.

Introduced in1954 and built in Single, two and 4 car combinations for General Local and Branch line working.
The bodies were constructed of aluminium keeping the weight down and giving them the name 'lightweight'.
Motor carriages were fitted with 2 BUT(AEC) 150hp horizontal 6 cylinder engines with fluid flywheel and Wilson four speed preselector gearboxes.
These railcars were the second batch of DMUs built at Derby (the first being built for the Leeds-Bradford service with Leyland engines and Lysholm Smith Torque Converters).
The units could be found in Cumbria, the North East, Lincolnshire, East Anglia, The Midlands and Wales.
Three of the units were later used by the B.R. Research Centre in Derby and painted in their distinctive livery of red/blue.

One single car unit and one twin car unit have been preserved.
