GWR 48XX
Built from 1932-1936 these Collet designed 0-4-2 Side Tanks were designed for light branch work.
Originally numbered in the 4800-4874 series the locomotives were renumbered to 1400-1474 in 1946 to allow for 2-8-0 locomotives fitted for oil burning to be allocated the numbers.
These small tank locomotives could could be found scattered as far as Birkenhead, Fishguard, London, Weymouth and Ashburton.
A similar class the 58XX (numbers 5800-5819) identical in every respect apart from not being autotrain fitted.
BR number series 1400-1474 (Renumbered in 1946 by the GWR from 4800-4874)
Last locomotive withdrawn 1964,.
4 have been preserved
The GWR 48xx sounds have been recorded from the prototype.
