NIR ’Tamper’
Plasser & Theurer Tamper.
Plasser and Theurer is an Austrian company established in 1953 specialising in railway track maintenance machines.
Modern tampers have two functions, packing the ballast under the track to provide a smooth passage of trains and also the alignment of the track.
To carry out this process the tamping machine will position itself over the track to be tamped.
It will then attach itself to the rails using clamps which will hold the rail in position (aligning it if necessary).
'Spades' will be extended down into the ballast and vibrate compacting the ballast.
The machine then moves on a few sleepers and the process is restarted.
These machines can be found widespread throughout the world, in fact Plasser and Theurer's publicity states that they have sold their machines to the railways the world over.
