CIE/IR/IE 071

Class 071 Co-Co (NIR Class 111)
Built 1976 by General Motors in America these locomotives had the GM Electro Motive Division 12-645E3B two stroke power units developing 2450hp (later upgraded to 12-645E3C in the 1990s). The development of these locomotives can be traced back to the Milwaukee Road who required a lightweight version of the SD39 for use on track with restricted loading limits.
These units designated SDL39 formed the basis of the class 071 for CIE.
Although very dissimilar to their American cousins these locomotives share a number of common parts with them.
When first introduced these locomotives were put to use on the main lines on Inter-City trains and heavier freights but in later years due to weight restrictions being lifted have appeared all over the system.

The Northern Ireland Railways class 111’s are identical locomotives and were purchased for use on the Belfast-Dubin 'Enterprise' trains.
In the early 1990s 111 and 112 were modified with head end power for carriage heat and lighting but this was seldom used and has now been isolated.
Since the introduction of the class 201, class 111s have been relegated to fright (mostly engineers trains).
One, No.112 was loaned to IE between 2003 and 2006.
