Midland Compound 4P
MR/LMS/BR Deeley & Fowler 4P Compound
Deeley introduced the 'Midland Compound' design with 7ft driving wheels in 1905 as a simplified development of Johnson, his predecessors earlier design.
These locomotives were considered the most successful design of compound locomotives built for use in the UK.
The locomotives have one high pressure and 2 low pressure cylinders steam being used in the high pressure cylinder is exhausted into a low pressure steam chest the steam from which is used for a second time in the low pressure cylinders.
Therefore when running they have 4 exhaust beats per revolution even though there are 3 cylinders.
After the Grouping in 1923 the LMS carried out a series of tests on various locomotive types and decided on the 'Midland Compound' design as the standard for express passenger work and built 190 of the locomotives with detail differences and smaller 6ft 9in driving wheels. Then locos could be found working all over the ex Midland lines, between St Pancras, Manchester, Leeds and Carlisle and Bristol plus on the Ex LNWR lines out of Euston. Scotland also had a fair share and could be found anywhere from Aberdeen, Glasgow, Stranraer down to Carlisle.
BR No. Series Deeley 41000-41044.
Fowler 40900-40939 & 41044-41199.
Last Locomotive withdrawn 1960.
1 member of the Deeley batch built in 1902 has been preserved.
The Midland Compound sounds are taken from an Irish ‘V’ class locomotive as they are built to the same design as the Midland Compounds with the same 3 cylinder set up.
So we are classing them a generic sounds as there are none in preservation still running.
The sounds are enhanced with archived sounds.
