S&DJR Fowler 7F
S&DJR/LMS/BR 7F 2-8-0
These locomotives were designed by Fowler for the Bath to Bournemouth line being used for both freight and passenger traffic on that undulating route.
The original 6 locomotives in this class were built by the Midland Railway in 1914 at Derby Locomotive works and numbered 80-85 in the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway stock book.
A further batch of 5 were built in 1925 (numbered 86-90) by Robert Stephenson & Co. Ltd with a larger boiler.
An interesting fact is that the Derby built locomotives were right hand drive whereas the Robert Stephenson & Co. ones were left hand drive.
Although trials took place on the Midland Main Line in 1918 and again in 1926-27 the class remained on the S&DJR apart from trips to Derby Works for major overhauls.
The LMS renumbered the locos 9670-9680 in 1930 and again in 1932 to 13800-13810.
BR No. Series 53800-83810
Last locomotive withdrawn in 1964.
Two of the Robert Stephenson & Co. locos are preserved
