Yorkshire Engine Co. 0-4-0 170hp (Ex BRClass 02)

In 1960, freight was mostly transported in short wheelbase wagons and delivered to industrial and dock areas which abounded in tight curves.
There was, therefore, a need for a shunting locomotive of medium power with a short wheelbase.
The Yorkshire Engine Co. designed and produced 20 locomotives with a veranda at the cab end to fulfil the role. Apart from a couple used in Goole, all were used in the Liverpool, Manchester and Preston area.
The class 02 was fitted with a Rolls-Royce 6-cylinder engine coupled to a hydraulic transmission.
Withdrawals commenced in 1969 with the drop in wagonload freight, but eleven were found further use being sold on for industrial use.
D2860 became a celebrity when it was commissioned at the National Railway Museum as the Museum’s shunter. Sales of Ex BR 02 were to LCP Fuels, C. F. Booth, Redland Roadstone, Bird Group, Lowton Metals, N.C.B., Blue Circle, and Arnot Young & Co.
In addition to these sold on from BR the Yorkshire Engine Co. offered new-built locomotives with different engines and transmission but with the same basic body profile.

BR Number series D 2850-D2869
(No.s D2851-D2853 were renumbered 02.001-02.003 and D2856 became 02.004)

The Shunter file has the gear change and none gear change (automatic) feature so you have to change gear to make the locomotive go faster.
