SECR/SR/BR N Class 2-6-0

SECR/SR/BR N Class 2-6-0

Designed by Maunsell these mixed traffic engines were introduced in 1917 with production continuing up to 1934.
During the depression in the 1920s the British Government in an attempt to alleviate unemployment, Woolwich Arsenal produced parts for 100 of the class hoping to sell them on to the big 4.
The only sales were to the Southern who purchased parts for 50, then 26 sets of parts went to the Great Southern Railway in Ireland and a further 6 went to the Metropolitan Railway (who produced them as 2-6-4 Tank locos). These locomotives could be found all over the Southern region from Kent to Devon working passenger, parcels and fright trains.
