NER/LNER/BR ES1 Bo+Bo DC Electric
In 1904 the North Eastern Railway opened one of the first electric suburban rail multiple unit systems in Britain running at 600v.dc third rail pickup.
1905 saw the introduction of 2 electric locomotives to work the steeply graded mile long freight line from Manors to (Tyne) Quayside.
The frames and bodywork were built by the railway with electrical equipment supplied and fitted by Thompson-Houston at Loughborough.
The locomotives operated using third rail pick up in the tunnel sections and overhead wires in the yards. Originally bow collectors for the overhead wires were used but they were changed to pantographs some time prior to 1922.
The design of the locomotives was with a central cab with sloping bonnets known as the steeple cab type.
The locomotives spent their entire life working the branch up until 1964 officially shedded at Heaton they were however maintained at Gosforth.
Originally numbered 1 and 2 by the NER, they became LNER Nos. 6480 and 6481 then again by BR to 26500 and 26501.
