SR/BR Leader 0-6-6-0T
Bulleid was a designer of steam locomotives always willing to try out new novel experimental types but the Leader was probably just a little too advanced for its time.
The layout was a single body shell incorporating a cab at each end, bunker firebox, boiler and smokebox in one body casing.
This body was carried on 2 x 6-wheel bogies which contained the buffers, couplings, cylinders, valve gear and a chain linking the drive wheels together.
The steam to power the cylinders was carried from the body by flexible couplings.
The lighting was powered by a steam generator with cab lights, coupling lights and route indicator lights (they were only used after dark as white disks were used in daylight.).
No red marker light was installed a standard oil lamp being used when required.
Although 36001 was completed at Brighton in 1949, it was the only one to run trials.
36002 was completed but never steamed then in 1950 the project was cancelled.
36001 ran trials out of Brighton and later out of Eastleigh at one time running with the ex LNER Dynamometer Car.
Due to the conditions in the fireman’s position at one time there was a proposal to use oil as the fuel but that was never proceeded with.
BR number series 36001-36005 (only 36001 ran on BR metals)
