LMS/BR Caprotti 5MT Black 5
In 1948 Crewe outshopped 20 Stanier Black 5s modified by Ivatt with Caprotti valve gear.
The first 44738-44747 had low running plates and Timken roller bearings, electric lighting and a double chimney. Two later Caprotti valve geared engines were produced in 1951 by Horwich Works with high running plates, Skefko bearings and double chimneys.
The Caprotti Black 5s spent most of their lives shedded in Leeds, Manchester, Southport, Liverpool, Llandudno Junction.
A few managed to spend short periods shedded in Birmingham, Bristol, Willesden and Derby.

Last locomotive withdrawn in 1966.
No Caprotti Black 5s have been preserved.
The Caprotti sounds are generic as there are none in preservation still working.
The sounds are enhanced with archived sounds from a recording from a Caprotti std 5 locomotive.
