GWR Railmotor, Steam Railcar No. 1-99

GWR Railmotor, Steam Railcar No. 1-99

Between 1903 and 1908 the GWR built 99 Railmotors.
They were essentially carriages which contained a vertical boiler, a driving cab at each end, and a steam powered bogie underneath one end.
At the opposite end was a standard unpowered bogie.
The units were designed as an economy measure to cut costs on lightly used lines and were scattered throughout the GWR network.
New unstaffed halts were added to the network as the guards issued tickets whilst travelling.
Upon withdrawal many were converted to Autotrailers (also known as Autocoaches and Autotrains)for use with push – pull fitted locomotives.

Withdrawal of Railmotors commenced in 1914 and the final one in 1935.
GWR Number series 1-99.
None entered BR service.
One has been preserved.
