SECR/SR/BR D1 Class 4-4-0

Built between 1901 and 1907 these engines were rebuilt between 1921 and 1927.
Originally designed by Wainwright, Maunsell replaced the boilers with upgraded superheated ones and fitted Belpaire fireboxes.
Another enhancement was the replacement of slide valves with piston valves.
Of the twenty-one locomotives rebuilt twenty entered BR stock in 1948 upon nationalisation.
The class stayed mostly in the Eastern section of the Southern Railway being shedded at Stewarts Lane, Guildford, Tonbridge, Ashford, and Dover for most of their lives.
The BR power classification for the rebuilt locomotives was 2P.

BR Number series from 31145-31749 with gaps.
Last locomotive withdrawn 1961.
None have been preserved.
