GWR/BR 14xx with Autotrailer’s
(Works with sound fitted AutoTrailer)
GWR/BR 14XX
Built from 1932-1936 these Collet designed 0-4-2 Side Tanks were designed for light branch work and working autotrains.
Originally numbered in the 4800-4874 series the locomotives were renumbered to 1400-1474 in 1946 to allow for 2-8-0 locomotives fitted for oil burning to be accommodated. These small tank locomotives could could be found scattered as far as Birkenhead, Fishguard, London, Weymouth and Ashburton.
A similar class the 58XX (numbers 5800-5819) identical in every respect apart from not being autotrain fitted.
The principle of autotrain working is briefly having a driving cab in a coach allowing the driver to control basic driving functions remotely.
The operation of autotrains dispensed with the need to run the locomotive around to the other end of the train at terminating points of the trains journey.
When driven from the autotrailer cab the driver had control of the regulator, could set the brakes, and had a warning gong.
Trailers were also fitted with AWS (Automatic Warning System bell and horn).
There was also a handbrake and buzzer or bell system to communicate with the fireman(who remained on the locomotive) and the guard.
At Wheeltappers we have developed a locomotive decoder that complements the autotrailer.
Thus if you have a decoder fitted autotrailer and separate decoder fitted locomotive, the whistles/gongs will work directionally with the sound emitting from the correct vehicle, there are other subtleties such a the AWS controls coming from the relevant vehicle also.
The function for two autotrailer’s assumes one either end of the loco so the loco is sandwiched in between.
The autotrailer mode can be turned off so the loco with work as normal.
The default is one autotrailer mode coupled to the bunker end of the loco.
*This decoder works in conjunction with another sound decoder fitted in the autotrailer, Two sound decoders required.*
