Hunslet 16” Saddle Tank
In 1923 Hunslet introduced its 16” (16 inch refers to the cylinder diameter) and production lasted up until 1958.
The design was for a rugged easily maintained locomotive which would suit the needs of collieries, quarries, docks and other industrial locations.
In total 44 locomotives of the type were built some for export, the furthest travelled was delivered to Australia in 1938.
The type has proved popular with a number of the smaller preserved railways.
Over 10 have been preserved.
