LNER W1 10000

LNER W1

The original locomotive numbered 10000, built to test new ideas, was completed at Darlington works in 1929.
It had the unique (for a British tender locomotive) wheel arrangement of 4-6-4 and was fitted with a high pressure (450psi) Yarrow marine type boiler.
After undergoing tests it was decided, in 1936 to rebuild the locomotive into a more conventional form with a standard type of boiler.
After rebuilding it looked very similar to an A4 but longer.
In 1948 when transferred to British Railways the number was changed to 60700.
The locomotive was used on the East Coast Main line out of Kings Cross where it was shedded before being moved to Doncaster Shed in 1953.

BR Number 60700
Withdrawn in 1959 not preserved.

The W1 sounds are generic as there are none in preservation.

The sounds are enhanced with archived sounds from an A4.
