Introduced in 1961 this group of 30 3 car units built by Birmingham R.C.&W.Co. were designed for the demanding route over the Pennines from Lancashire to Yorkshire.
Known as Calder Valley units they had a Driving Motor Brake Composite (DMBC), a Trailer Second (TS) and a Driving Motor Composite (DMC).
The Motor cars each had 2 x Rolls Royce series 130D engines developing 180hp. giving a total of 720hp for a three-car set.
The units were originally allocated to Darlington, Bradford and Newton Heath depots and spent most of their lives in Lancashire, Yorkshire and the North Eastern Region of British Railways.
4 power cars were transferred to BR departmental stock between 1988 and 1990
4 power cars and one trailer car have been preserved.
