Ffestiniog Railway Double Fairlie 0-4-0 + 0-4-0

In1865 Robert Fairlie patented a new way of building and operating a steam locomotive by creating a vehicle which could move in either direction without the need for turntables, use all of its weight for adhesion on the driving wheels and was articulated allowing it to traverse sharper curves.
The Ffestiniog railway needed a narrow gauge locomotive which could traverse sharp curves and the Fairlie suited it’s needs admirably and in 1869 purchased ‘Litte Wonder’.
In exchange for using the Ffestiniog as reference site Fairlie granted the railway a licence to use his patent without restriction.
In all The Ffestiniog owned a total of 6 locomotives of the Fairlie type with another currently being built.
