SECR/SR/BR D Class 4-4-0

Built between 1901 and 1907 these engines designed by Wainwright were used on the most prestigious expresses of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway.
They originally had brass domes and were subsequently known as Coppertops.
Twenty one of the class were later rebuilt to class D1 with superheated boilers, Belpaire fireboxes and new cabs, spoiling the elegant lines of the originals.
Twenty eight of the class in their original form entered BR stock in 1948 and were given power class 1P.
The D1 class soldiered on until 1961.
The class D and D1 engines spent most of their lives in the Eastern Sector of the Southern Region.

BR Number series from 31057-31750 with gaps.
Last locomotive withdrawn 1956.
1 has been preserved.
