GNR/LNER/BR K3
GNR/LNER/BR K3
Designed by Gresley of the Great Northern Railway for general mixed traffic work locomotives.
They were a more powerful development of the earlier 2-cylinder K2 class.
The K3 had a larger boiler, 3 cylinders and were the first locomotives to use the Gresley’s derived conjugated valve gear.
The first locomotive entered service in 1920 with production continuing up until 1937 with a total of 193 being built.
They were very powerful sure-footed locomotives and could be found working around Edinburgh, Carlisle, Tyneside, Nottingham London, Lincolnshire and Easy Anglia.
Their weight precluded them from working on lines where there was a weight restriction.
No. 61863 was rebuilt in 1948 as a 2 cylinder locomotive by Thompson who succeeded Gresley.
BR Number series 61800-61862 and 61864-61992
Last locomotive withdrawn 1962
None have been preserved.
912 with production continuing up to 1921 in total 75 were built.
From 1931-1937 onwards the original batch built in 1912 and 1913 which had small boilers were rebuilt with larger boilers making them equivalent to the 1914-1921 batch.
In 1925 a number of the class were transferred to Scotland and were given side window cabs.
The area of operation was from Mallaig, Aberdeen, Immingham, Stratford, Colwick and Gorton.
